Shoreman Basketball Club
The Shoreman Basketball Club was organized to provide opportunities for the area's youth to improve their basketball skills and allow them to play in leagues and regional tournaments. The Club is open to youth ages 10 – 17.
Behind Shoreman
The teams are under the direction of Pat McClary, former Kent County High School head coach and Ron Jordan. An important new activity added this year is individual skills workouts at the new community center. Each workout will be supervised by one of the Shoreman Basketball Club coaches and is targeted for the player with a serious interest in the game.
Plans for 2010
The club plans to once again have two teams, a high school team and a U15 team. We plan to attend the Keystone State team camp. We will participate in the same two summer leagues, the Wilmington Friends League and the Wesley College League. We plan to take a trip in late July to the Lehigh Valley and participate in the Stellers Tournament and visit a number of local historical, educational and fun attractions. This tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the US. We also plan to play in a fall showcase tournament. We will offer partial scholarships to the Coach Wootten Basketball Camp. This is the best fundamental basketball camp in the country. We have made arrangements to use the new community center in Worton for our practices.
Puerto Rico 2009
The highlight of last season's activities was the Club's trip to Puerto Rico. The following members made the trip: Rocky Harris, Donte Thompson, Jay Lewis, Wil Dolcin, Jontier Tobinson, Davis Bushby, Aaron Dionisio, Aaron Warren, Kwandry Wilson and Ralph Johnson. Coaches Pay McClary and Ron Jordan along with Skip Bushby accompanied the team.
The team flew from Newark Liberty Airport on the evening of August 4th and arrived in Aguadila, Puerto Rico about 4 hours later. The first day the team went on a snorkeling safari over a pristine coral reef. The second day the group went horseback riding through a dry forest and along a beach fronting the Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon, they enjoyed the Las Cascadas water park in Aguadilla. The third day the group traveled to the Rio Camuy Cave Park, and toured a huge cave system. In the afternoon they visited the Arecibo Observatory, home of the world's largest radio telescope. By day four it was time for a break, so the day was spent at spectacular Crash Boat Beach. The team was treated to a free lunch by the local fishing coop and the highlight was a ride on the "banana" towed behind a boat. On Sunday, day five, the group traveled to Old San Juan and the El Muro fort. Thanks to the efforts of Coach Jordan, the team was given a special VIP tour arranged by Rosa Lopez, the United States Attorney for Puerto Rico. The last full day was given to a hike through the Guajataca rain forest. After a mile and a half walk, the team entered an unlighted cave. Using flashlights, the players explored deep into the cave before returning through the forest.
