Transitional Housing & Education: Housing needs are the greatest concern for families in desperate situations. Affordable housing is at crisis levels in Kent County with nearly 3,000 families in need of emergency housing each year. WIN maintains four locations in Kent County, MD where small families stay for up to two years while they complete a coordinated program to achieve their goals of self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Often, this program includes support while the parent pursues an education program that will result in their earning a living wage.
In 2007, 3 new families began their participation in our long-term transitional housing program. 1 family completed their participation in this program. Temporary housing was provided for 3 additional families in crisis who are currently working on achieving their goals.
Emergency Assistance Program: Specialized, one-time assistance for individuals and families struggling to meet economic needs. This crisis-intervention program has covered such expenses as: rent or mortgage payments, child-care scholarships, utility payments, medical costs (prescriptions, eyeglasses, dentist, & medical payments), household items, moving assistance and more... In 2007, 29 families received $6,799.80 in rental subsidies and emergency move-in funds. An additional 24 families received $4,993.35 in funds for, utility payments, relocation assistance, prescription costs, food, child care and other emergency needs.
Service Coordination and Mentoring: The need for services is great, and no one organization can hope to meet all of these needs. WIN works together with existing organizations to help clients identify existing services and then steps in to provide direct assistance when those services are absent or inadequate. This program also includes:
Job & Résumé counseling - Individualized needs and education assessment, including local job referrals and basic résumé preparation.
Budget counseling - ranging from basic budgeting instruction for clients who receive one-time assistance to comprehensive budget counseling and supervision for clients in our long-term programs.
In 2007, 72 clients received referral assistance and mentoring through our service coordination program in Chestertown and the surrounding area. An additional 23 clients received budget counseling and mentoring as part of their participation in other program services.
